At ilos HQ we play Smash 4, and when I say we play Smash 4 I mean WE PLAY SMASH 4. But this post isn’t about how to beat your coworkers at Smash (there are better resources for that), it’s about how Super Smash Bros. can improve your business, just like it’s improved ours.
Benefits of Super Smash Bros.
A well needed break – Super Smash not only gives you a great way to bring the team together, but also provides a way to take a break from everything that’s going on. In a startup you can easily find yourself at the office for 12 hours, but as long as you have some fun things to do with people you like spending time with you’ll hardly notice. This is also a great way to get perspective on a problem you’re struggling with. You’ve heard the expression sleep on it? Here at ilos we “Smash on it!”.
Team building – If you’re looking for a way to bring the team together Smash offers a rare mix of competition, regret, and complete hype. They say you don’t really know your significant other until you’ve made them sit through slow internet. If that’s true then you definitely don’t know your teammates until you play Smash. Here is a picture of the team and our characters:
Super Smash is about good habits – Making poor decisions or being too predictable with your competition results in bad outcomes, just like in a startup. Even good tactics if used to death become bad habits, easily punishable by a competent opponent. So whether you’re thinking about throwing out a new feature release or launching a smash attack remember to think twice.
The flip side of this is that for every situation you have different options to choose from. Do I rely on my shield to fend off an overly aggressive opponent? Do I take the initiative and approach? Having several options in any given situation is another part of being in a startup. You need to be able to evaluate decisions quickly and make good choices. Sure you might have a bit longer than 30 frames but the skills you pick up here are the same.
Why Smash Bros.?
Anyone can pick it up – Super Smash Bros. is a game that you pick up and play today. Will you be amazing out of the gate? Nope! We certainly weren’t.
But if you stick with you can reap all of the benefits that come from building a better team, enjoying some serious hype along the way!
